Begun in 2004, this
annual Education Division event is usually held
in October at one of the local school
gymnasiums. Teams of 4 adults attempt to spell a
series of words until all but one team is
eliminated. The event is great fun and
entertainment with many teams having their own
cheering squads in attendance to root them on.
As many as 45 teams participate each year.
Money that is
raised through team applications and
sponsorships, as well as “bye words” (used to
stay in the game if you misspell a word) is
divided between the Chamber of Commerce and the
public schools. In recent years, programs of the
schools that have benefited have included:
libraries, science/math, and arts/music. Schools
are asked to account for how these dollars are
spent at each school.
