The annual Job
Shadow Day event objective is to match 10th
grade students with mentors in career fields
that the students have selected as possible
careers. The program is fashioned after the
national Job Shadow Day which begins on February
2nd each year.
Responsible
tenth graders from all of our Beaufort County
High Schools (public and private) are asked to
submit written responses to questions regarding
school and life. Based on those responses,
students are selected to participate in the
program and are matched with a mentor.
Mentors meet
their students for a program breakfast before
heading out to the workplace for a few hours of
exposure to the workplace and mentor’s career.
Everyone returns for a luncheon and awards
ceremony recognizing the top written responses
on the applications.
This program is
sponsored and produced by the Chamber’s
Education Division. In recent years, upwards of
100 students/year have been matched with
mentors in career fields such as:
Nursing, radiology, veterinary medicine, animal
shelter, cosmetology, eye care, police,
fire/rescue, attorney, architect, school
teacher, church work, retail, dentistry/hygiene,
auto mechanics, real estate broker, banking and
finance, computers, and TV station.
Students often
come away from these experiences with a much
better appreciation of whether or not such a
career might be in their future.
