The Education
Division of the Chamber of Commerce produces an
annual event in September titled Maritime
Education Days for 8th graders.
More than 600 students attend this event each
year.
Located at the
N.C. Estuarium, a partner in the sponsorship of
this event, students rotate through a series of
five learning stations during a day of activity.
About 200 students per day attend for three
days. Subjects such as marine archeology, the
Estuarium programs, boating safety, maritime sea
chanties (songs), fishing/crabbing/shrimping
industry, and fossils have been included in the
program.
This event was first held in 2004
as part of the Chamber’s 100th Year
Anniversary celebration and has continued each
year.
